before CCD and cmos sensors the common in video camers, glass videcron or videcon tubes were used to record video images, these operate a scanning 'finger' beam that is used to ativate photosensitive material on the face of the tube, the video signal is then read at the face of the tube as the 'finger' scans across the face in a raster action.
